Echoes 35th Anniversary: 35 Icons of Echoes
![]()
We’re celebrating 35 years with the 35 Icons of Echoes. These are the artists who have informed the show over the past 35 years. We started with the 30 Icons from our 30th Anniversary and, with listener votes, we’ve added five more for our 35th Anniversary. This list covers the vast range of music that Echoes has presented and most of these artists are still active and creating great music. Some are overwhelmingly influential which is what brings Brian Eno and Steve Roach to the top, although I could say that most of this list is pretty influential. Many have created sounds that are utterly unique like Jon Hassell, and Enya. Some just have a finger on the threads of the divine like Agnes Obel and Dead Can Dance/Lisa Gerrard. But they are all Icons of Echoes.
Each artist has a link to an interview or concert.

Wonderful starting point for exploration of fascinating music. Of those I know best, I’d most wish to bring a wider audience to Will Ackerman’s continuing legacy of fine solos & collaborations; Steve Reich’s unique works played by marimbists & percussion ensembles; and Loreena McKennitt’s unparalleled DVD “Nights From the Alhambra” which both summarizes her peak era and blows away any other concert of Celtic women (or tenors) PBS ever aired.
Here’s hoping another 5 years brings fans electing more great Echoes regulars to sit among the icons. Our past decade is so rich with talent; most compelling to me have been Tigerforest, Aukai, Poppy Ackroyd, Grandbrothers and Avawaves, each with multiple fine albums I return to again and again. Many thanks 😀
Thank you and thanks for also being open to newer artists on the show!
