From Academics to Ambience with J. Anthony Allen
You don’t usually find academic composers making music that you might find on a dance floor or in a chillout room, but J. Anthony Allen breaks that convention. He’s had compositions performed by the Minnesota Orchestra but unlike most academic composers who enter contemporary pop derived worlds, his music actually sounds like it belongs next to Bassnectar or Aphex Twin. Last night, March 8th, 2016, I listened to, what I understood to be ‘Long Gone’ by Emilie & Ogden. I was driving, and as a musician, I found the recording’s instrumentation stimulating.
Today I located that selection on iTunes, however ‘Long Gone’ seems as a different version of the song to me. Was the Echoes version the same as the “10 000” album recording???
This is Ted again. While looking over the Echoes playlist from last night, I discovered the song and artist for which I initially searched was in actuality, not Emilie & Ogden, but rather Sierra Hull and her composition “Wings Of The Dawn” !!
Intriguing strings, layered acoustic instrumentation and an enchanting vocal performance throughout “Wings…”
I purchased Ms. Hull’s album: Weighted Minds. WOW.
