Anoushka Shankar

Anoushka Shankar has released an impressive trilogy of EPs in the last year that take her sitar in different directions. Chapter I: Forever For Now; Chapter II: How Dark It Is Before the Dawn; and Chapter III: We Return to Light, find Shankar in 3 different settings: World Fusion, Ambient and Improvisation  She also has three different producers including Pakistani-American singer and producer, Arooj Aftab. John Diliberto talks to this master musician who has stepped way out of the shadow of her father, on Echoes weekend stations from PRX.

Mark Dwane

On the next Echoes we travel through Aeons by Mark Dwane. Dwane is the gifted guitarist and synth musician who usually composes dynamic and melodic works. But his latest album is a more contemplative release. This may be Mark’s final album. I contacted him last week and gave the pro forma “how are you doing?” in my email. I never expected his response. Mark has been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer and after a program of chemo therapy has now been given about six months to live. We’ve played Marks music since his 1988 debut, Monuments of Mars and have played all of his some 22 albums since then. We had Mark on the show once, should’ve been more. He had a CD of the Month in 2007 with his album, 2012, and he would’ve had a lot more but he went fully digital on his releases early on. I’ve always thought Mark was overlooked by the space, ambient and electronic music communities. So, during his Chemo run, he recorded a more contemplative album than usual, called Aeons . We have two tracks from it on Echoes weekend stations. . Appreciate this artist while we can. We’ll hear two tracks from it on Echoes from PRX.
