Russeel Walder's Speak to the Storm CD of the Month and Echoes 34th Anniversary
A CD of the Month from Russel Walder. He’s come a long way since his Windham Hill duo with Ira Stein. His album, Speak to the Storm is full of sensual moods, seductive EDM-meets-the-Middle-East rhythms and electronic atmospheres. And also Walder’s emotional oboe playing. Hear exactly what that means tonight, Monday October 2, when we play a lot of Russel Walder’s Speak to the Storm, the October CD of the Month on Echoes from PRX.

On Echoes’ 34th Anniversary we go back to music from that first year of Echoes Programs. The first song played on the show was Tangerine Dream’s “Tiergarten” from the album, Le Parc and we had an interview with Pat Metheny. Not a bad beginning I’d say. Today, I’m taking you into the wayback machine and we’re going to hear music that we were playing in those first three months of 1989. A lot of it is things we still play while some of it has drifted away. But get ready to trigger those memory engrams. Expect to hear some Tangerine Dream, Jon Hassell, Brian Eno, Philip Glass and some music you’ve completely forgotten about. It was a blast to put together and reminds of where we’ve been and how far we’ve gone, curating the music of the future.
