We Remember Barry Stramp of Coyote Oldman and New Music by STS9

We  remember Barry Stramp, from the group Coyote Oldman. The founding half of Coyote Oldman was Michael Graham Allen who not only plays Native American flutes, but makes them. Barry Stramp on the other had, was a classically trained flute player who specialized in electronics, often older electronics to expand the sound of their flutes. In my liner notes for their best of compilation, In Beauty I Walk, I wrote that Barry Stramp is the modernist of the group. Classically trained in concert flute and composition, he also studied engineering and physics. That means he could drop references to Pierre Boulez and IRCAM as well as DSP and FFT processing into a conversation. It’s Stramp’s skill at studio manipulation that turned the raw material of Allen’s flutes into the expansive soundscapes that are Coyote Oldman. Except for one track in 2020, Coyote Oldman stopped recording with their 2011 album, Time Travelers. He left the planet on December 1. We remember Barry Stramp.
