New Music from Ravi Kulur and Barry Phillips
On the next Echoes it’s world fusion from Ravi Kulur and Barry Phillips. Barry Phillips is a cellist and is a fixture on the southern California new music scene. He’s been on the show a few times, playing in William Coulter and Mary McLaughlin’s group, Celtic Requiem and performing Shape-Note songs in his house with his wife, oboist Shelley Phillips. He was a student of sitarist Ravi Shankar and worked closely with him on several recordings, creating orchestral arrangements right up until Shankar’s death. Ravi Kulur is master of the Indian bansuri flute and was also a student of Shankar. John Diliberto has a couple of tracks from their album, Breath & Bow on Echoes from PRX.
