Immersion & Suss Live and Joe Boyd on Global Music This Weekend on Echoes
What great shows for Echoes Weekend listeners with Immersion & Suss Live and an interview with legendary producer & author Joe Boyd.
First, get immersed in the Nanocluster with Immersion and SUSS, live. It’s a surprising and spectacularly successful meeting of two different worlds. Immersion is the electronic duo of Colin Newman from the iconic new wave band Wire and Malka Spigel from the new wave band, Minimal Compact. SUSS is the Ambient Country band with Bob Holmes on guitar, mandolin, violin and harmonica; Jonathan Gregg on pedal steel guitar, and guitarist Pat Irwin from The Raybeats, B-52s and TV’s Dexter sequel and prequel soundtracks. This collaboration travels the borders of ambient, country and electronic music on their album, Nanocluster Volume 3, which was the Echoes CD of the Month in March. We recorded in the newly-christened Museum of Music Technology in Harleysville, PA, formerly called the Electronic Music Education and Preservation Project (EMEAPP). Join John Diliberto with Immersion and Suss live, on Echoes from PRX.

Then hear Joe Boyd, a legend in music from producing Pink Floyd (“Arnold Lane”), Nick Drake, Maria Muldaur, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and Muzsikás, to his Hannibal world music label, and more. A few years ago he wrote a great book that was a memoir of his life in the rock and roll world, White Bicycles. Now he’s written a deep dive into the influence of world music on western culture called And the Roots of Rhythm Remain – A Journey Through Global Music. It’s just been issued in paperback. From Ravi Shankar, to Flamenco, from South Africa to Paul Simon, Desi Arnaz to Dizzy Gillespie, it is a long, sometimes convoluted trip, all in search of an authentic music presence. We talk to this global traveler on Echoes from PRX.
