Joni Mitchell-Flashback 50 to Her 1968 Debut

Joni Mitchell was an icon before she was an icon. By the time she’d released her debut, she’d already composed important and hit songs for others, including “Both Sides Now” and “Chelsea Morning” for Judy Collins and Dave Van Ronk, “Eastern Rain” for Fairport Convention, “Urge for Going” and “The Circle Game” for Tom Rush. She was so prolific that none of those songs appeared on her own 1968 debut album, Song to a Seagull. This was before Mitchell discovered LA session players, jazz, and world music. It was Joni in a more purely folk form, but a form that was already being bent and altered to fit Mitchell’s uncanny melodic sensibilities and her incisive lyrics which have not become dated. Produced by David Crosby, and mostly just Joni on guitar and piano, you can already hear her intricate finger-picking style and sense of space.
