Erik Wøllo's Solastalgia: The Echoes November CD of the Month
Weekend Echoes listener hear the November CD of the Month, Erik Wøllo traverses memories, distress, loss and solitude with a double CD called Solastalgia. The Norwegian guitarist takes us on a journey of sequencer-driven grooves and soaring melodies.
You should be no stranger to the music of Erick Wøllo . He’s been a fixture on the show from the very beginning of Echoes 35 years ago. And he was at it before then, releasing his debut in 1983 and dropping some 53 albums since then. At least eight of those have been Echoes CD of the Month picks. His new one is Solastalgia, which although it seems to combine the words solace and nostalgia, it is actually something different and darker than melancholy. Solastalgia is a term coined by Australian philosopher Glenn Albrecht that combines “solace,” “solus”(grief) and “-algia” to mark the existential depression, the sense of loss and distress at our changing environment. Erik has sculpted a tone poem traversing these changes and while it is full of melancholy, I think you will also find some solace here. Solastalgia is our November CD of the Month.
