Popol Vuh's Einsjäger und Siebenjäger at 50 and Gary Stroutsos Remembered
We celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album Einsjäger und Siebenjäger by Popol Vuh.
Popol Vuh was the name of the Mayan version of the book of the dead, and it’s also the name taken by the German Progressive rock group, Popol Vuh. The band was centered by pianist and composer Florian Fricke and they were central to the explosion of 70’s German music that included Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Ash Ra Tempel. They’re best known for the scores to several Werner Herzog films including Aguirre, The Wrath of God. We’re going to celebrate the 50th of their album Einsjäger und Siebenjäger, an epic album that solidified their move away from electronics to a more organic sound.
We also remember Gary Stroutsos a master of flutes who came to renown playing Native American flutes, but soon became an exponent of global flutes. He appeared on the show several times including 2 live performances. Gary left the planet on October 12 at 70. We’ll hear his music including collaborations with Jonn Serrie and David Lanz.
