Tonight on Echoes we’ll premiere the new single by Karmacoda. This band out of San Francisco has been moving under the radar in the trip-hop and downtempo worlds since they formed in 2000. But they’ve been releasing a string of impactful singles over the last year that have found a home on Echoes.
The group formed around singer Heather Pearce, singer and guitarist Brett Crockett. You can tell their influences from their name which is a nod to trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack’s “Karmacoma.” They released their debut, Reco Mended, in 2001. They’ve gone through a few membership iterations and have now landed on singer Jessica Ford, Eric Matsuno who plays bass and “other unique elements,” and Brett Crockett as the only remaining original member.
“Time” hasn’t been released as a single, but it’s on their forthcoming album, Lessons in Time. Today we offer you the premiere of a remix conducted by Nature-inspired lo-fi producer Birds of the West.
It’s a slow downtempo groove with Jessica Fords reduced to a single repeated verse over vinyl scratches, muted percussion, electric piano and synth pads. It’s a hypnotic trip; a lysergic walk through a sunset dream.. You can hear it in the first hour of Echoes tonight.
