Phoebe Bridgers' Hallucination Dorm
Phoebe Bridgers is a singer-songwriter who has tended to the folkier side of things and she’s still there in her new track “Garden Song” which sounds pastoral enough until she fires up a bong. Then she heads into a hallucinatory dream in her video dorm room as she recounts some of her life passages in those awkward years. Furry, skeletal and surreal monsters, actually friends and brothers in Halloweenesque costumes, sit next to her while a hooded monk, comedian Tig Notaro, sits behind her on her bed.
Bridgers has come to some renown in the last 2 years or so. With her acclaimed album, Stranger in the Alps and then the trio boygenius with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker and her duo with Conor Oberst, Better Oblivion Community Center she’s become a central figure in the alternative singer-songwriter movement.
This is a trippy, deceptively innocent song where a “skinhead neighbor goes missing,” and “You touch my leg and I insist. But I wake up before we do it.”
