It’s been nearly 40 years since the Penguin Café Orchestra released their debut album, but their music is still having an influence on modern composers who are making a music between worlds, part classical, part folk and part experimental. Seti the First is an Irish duo of Thomas Haugh and Kevin Murphy who have their own take on this ambient chamber music sound. They’ve released a beautiful CD called Melting Calvary.
Among the traditional guitars, cellos and percussion on the album, are exotic instruments from the Marxochime Colony, a company in the mid-20th century that made hybrid instruments that were meant as amateur instruments, and easy to play.
But a few musicians have taken these toy instruments and brought them into a more experimental world. I first heard of them when composer Forrest Fang was playing them in the 1990s. Now Seti the First has made them part of their arsenal. You can hear them talk about it from their garden in Dublin on the Echoes Podcast.
