It’s ambient chamber music madness today on Echoes. We have two acts coming in whom we’ve wanted for a while. Even though neither have a new CD, opportunity knocked and we opened the door. Right now I have Slow Six warming up in the echoes Living Room.
Slow Six is Christopher Tignor and 4 other musicians on violin, keyboards, guitar, and drums. We were entranced by Private Times in Public Places, the debut album from Slow Six. It’s an album of subtle minimalist textures tinged by dissonance and slowly evolving melodies. When we interviewed them in February we knew we had to have them in to play.
Coincidentally, Amiina, the ambient chamber band from Iceland wanted to come in on the same day. We couldn’t turn them down so as soon as the Slow Six set is done, we’ll unplug them and pile Amiina into the studio. Some of you know that Amiina has been playing with Sigur Ros over the last couple of albums and tours, but they have aa charming EP of their own. If Slow Six is dark and pensive, Amiina is light and fairy-like. Though they probably wouldn’t like that description, their enigmatic music sounds like a music box from another world.
Both acts will be playing Philadelphia tomorrow.
Slow Six will be at The Gatherings at 8PM with another interesting ambient band, Hi-Fi Sky opening.
Amiina will be at World Cafe Live for a free 3PM show
