FEATURES FOR THE WEEK Monday November 1, 1999 GARY STROUTSOS - LOST MELODIES FROM NATIVE LANDS Gary Stroutsos used to be a jazz-Afro-Cuban flute player until he discovered the Native American flute. Now he's one of the few true virtuosos on that instrument. We talk with Gary about his flute quest and a new CD called "People of the Willows" (Makoche). It's based on melodies of the Mandan and Hidatsa tribes and features Stroutsos' flute along with piano, global percussion and Native singers Keith Bear and Nellie Youppee. We talk with Gary Stroutsos and his group about reviving lost melodies from Native Lands. Tuesday November 2, 1999 JON HASSELL'S RETURN TO SIMPLICITY Jon Hassell single-handedly created the techno tribal sound explored by everyone from Peter Gabriel to Steve Roach. In the past his music has been full of electronic processes and a collage like mosaic of electronic samples, creating what Hassell dubbed "Fourth World Music." On his latest CD, "Fascinoma" (Waterlily Acoustics), Hassell strips away the electronics for some organic improvisations with Ry Cooder, Jacky Terrasson and Indian flutist Ronu Majumdar. Jon Hassell talks about his new change of direction and reveals the secrets of his breathy, note bending trumpet sound. Wednesday November 3, 1999 LISA GERRARD & PIETER BOURKE - INSIDER SOUNDS Lisa Gerrard, the singer from Dead Can Dance, is known for her highly personal vocal explorations, calling up spirits from across time and cultures. Her music has always been inner- directed, but recently she composed the score to the new Michael Mann film, "The Insider". It's a tale of the tobacco industry cover-up, a whistle-blower and 60 Minutes. Gerrard and her partner, Pieter Bourke talk about the psychology of their soundtrack. Friday November 5, 1999 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH COYOTE OLDMAN Coyote Oldman transforms the Echoes Living Room into a Native pipe organ of Canyon dimensions. Michael Graham Allen and Barry Stramp are Coyote Oldman and they play Native American flutes, Incan pan-pipes and classical bass flute with melodies that ebb, flow and morph through each other. Stramp adds electronic effects, creating shadow echoes and subliminal melodies like a pipe organ blowing across a virtual canyon. Their latest album is "House Made of Dawn" (Hearts of Space). ***************************************************************** *denotes compilation ID# 99-J07-00217 Monday, November 1, 1999 (Echoes Program 36E) ARTIST SELECTION RECORDING First Half Hour Anthony Phillips Something Blue Dragonfly Dreams Kevin Braheny & Sun Showers Rain Tim Clark Angels of Venice Si Je Perdais Mon Angels of Venice Ami Billy Corgan & Await/Reflect Stigmata* Mike Garson Isadar Wedding Rain Active Imagination Jami Sieber Tell it by Heart Climb Against the Odds* Second Half Hour Mary McLaughlin Silhouettes Daughter of Lir Monk Tattoo Blink Samite Esawago Stars to Share Keola Beamer Blue Water Dolphin Kolonahe Peter Ross Afro Blue Primitive Heart Third Half Hour Paul Machlis At the Wooden Green Woods Bridge Vidna Obmana & Opening Theme True Stories Jeff Pearce Euphoria Sleep Euphoria Kevin Keller Convergence Pendulum Uakti Tiquie River/ Aguas da Amazonia Japura River David Michael Isle of Winds Isle of Winds Fourth Half Hour GARY STROUTSOS - LOST MELODIES FROM NATIVE LANDS Gary Stroutsos Traces of Hope People of the Willows Maggie Sansone Samhain Set A Traveler's Dream Mediaeval Baebes Erthe upon Erthe Worldes Blysse Willie & Lobo Rita's Jig Wild Heart Kaouding Cissoko Kora Revolution Kora Revolution ****************************************** WANT TO ADD ANY OF THESE CDS TO YOUR COLLECTION?
