THIS WEEK: THE BEST OF THE ECHOES LIVING ROOM CONCERTS All week, we take a look back at some of our favorite live performances from the past year. Monday August 23, 1999 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH MONK Monk is guitarist Ric Hordinski who weaves earthy dobro melodies through electronic effects and global rhythms. His instrumental album, Hush (Ether), is a gritty, intentionally coarse sounding ambient affair that made the 25 Essential Echoes CDs of 1998. In concert, Monk gets a different sound with Indian tablas and middle eastern percussion. We'll hear Monk in a performance recorded at Echoes affiliate WVXU. A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH ARYEH FRANKFURTER Aryeh Frankfurter doesn't often perform in his living room. He's usually found at places like San Francisco's Ghiradelli Square performing for tourists. But we caught Aryeh at home, where he took out his Celtic harp and plucked the melodies of his latest album, Harp Songs of the Midnight Sun (LionHarp), playing songs from Ireland and Scandinavia. Tuesday August 24, 1999 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH SECRET GARDEN Secret Garden creates an elaborate and lush sound full of orchestral strings, stacked synthesizers and dynamic rhythms. But in this living room concert we get to hear where it all begins, just the core sound of Secret Garden with violinist Fionnuala Sherry and keyboardist Rolf Lovland. We'll hear them in an intimate performance, playing music from their three albums including their latest, "Dawn of a New Century" (Philips). A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH THE LOS ANGELES GUITAR QUARTET The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet sit in the Echoes Living Room, attach staples and alligator clips to their acoustic guitars and play music form their latest CD, L.A.G.Q. Although their techniques sound avant-garde, their music is wonderfully lyrical, drawing from African, Balinese and South American traditions. They play it all in an Echoes Living Room Concert. Wednesday August 25, 1999 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH JOHN RENBOURN John Renbourn is a legend in Celtic music and guitar picking circles. He co-founded the English folk-fusion group, Pentangle, and helped revitalize the English folk music scene in the 1960s. John Renbourn is still at it with a recent album called "Traveler's Prayer" (Shanachie). Renbourn pulls up a couch in the Echoes Living Room to play some music and regale us with tales. A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH DAVID MICHAEL AND RANDY MEAD Sitting on a hill overlooking the ferry arriving into Port Townsend, Washington, we sit in on a living room concert with David Michael and Randy Mead. Mixing Celtic harp, Flutes and pan- pipes, Michael and Mead weave the melodies off their latest album, Courtship of the Moon (Purnima) in a live performance. Thursday August 26, 1999 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM Afro Celt Sound System is a swirl of Irish singing and studio technology, African vocals and percussion and electronic grooves. They've just come out with their second album, "Release" (Realworld) which extends the ecstatic sound of their debut,"Sound Magic". Irish singer Iarla O'Lionard, and Irish whistle player James McNally plug us in to Afro Celt Sound System's sonic designs in a live performance. A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH SPACECRAFT Strap yourself in, close your eyes and take off in a virtual planetarium as we hear a living room concert from Spacecraft. This trio of synthesizers, guitar and voice, disembarks in the Echoes living room and sets the skies rolling with their retro- space music sound. We'll hear them play music from their second CD, Hummel (Lektronic Soundscapes) as well as new music. Friday August 27, 1999 AN ECHOES LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH SPOOL Spool is the music of dark nights, rain swept streets and one last drink before closing. A quartet based in San Francisco and Chicago, they weave chill-out improvisations between ambient music and jazz, Pink Floyd and Bill Evans. We ventured into an industrial loft to capture Spool in an ambient living room concert with music from their self-titled debut (New Dog Records)and some brand new music. A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH BILLY MCLAUGHLIN When Billy McLaughlin plays his guitar, he dances with his eyes closed as his fingers tap out pirouettes on his fretboard. You won't be able to see that, but you can imagine it when Billy McLaughlin comes to the Echoes living room to play live. He'll tear through music from his latest album, "Out of Hand" (Narada) as well as some earlier releases. *************************************************************** *denotes compilation ID# 99-J07-00167 Monday, August 23, 1999 (Echoes Program 35A) ARTIST SELECTION RECORDING First Half Hour Adrian Legg Hymn for Jaco Fingers & Thumbs Omar Faruk Tekbilek I Love You One Truth Gerry Leonard Orchard Keeper Spooky Ghost David Helpling Rain Falls Sleeping on the Edge Of the World Second Half Hour A Living Room Concert with Monk Artist Track Original Album Monk Tattoo Hush Monk Lullabye Quiver Monk Ring Out Ye Crystal Hush Spheres Monk Waite Hill/ (unreleased) Willoughby Third Half Hour Peter Phippen Masked Dance Echoes of the Past Bill Frisell Shenandoah Good Dog, Happy Man Roger Eno & Lol Burst Damage Hammond Uakti Purus River Aguas da Amazonia Air Modular Mix Premiers Symptomes Fourth Half Hour A Living Room Concert with Aryeh Frankfurter Artist Track Original Album Aryeh Frankfurter The Spring Waltz Harp Songs of the Midnight Sun Aryeh Frankfurter The Water Lily Harp Songs of the Midnight Sun Aryeh Frankfurter North Fjord Halling Harp Songs of the Midnight Sun Aryeh Frankfurter Bridal March from Harp Songs of the Dalby Midnight Sun Clara Ponty The Embrace The Embrace Vidna Obmana & Bright Clouds True Stories Jeff Pearce ****************************************** WANT TO ADD ANY OF THESE CDS TO YOUR COLLECTION?
