FEATURES FOR THE WEEK Monday August 16, 1999 OTTMAR LIEBERT: IT'S NOUVEAU AGAIN On his latest album, "Innamorare"(Epic), Nuevo Flamenco guitarist Ottmar Liebert goes back to the sound that launched his career. Gone are the moody ambiences of "Opium" and the moody impressionism of "Leaning Into the Night." Liebert talks about his happier, more buoyant music, born of marriage, Italy and the spaces of Sante Fe. Tuesday August 17, 1999 IRA STEIN-BACH IMPROVISATIONS Johann Sebastian Bach has always been a source of inspiration for modern musicians. In the 60s, Dave Brubeck adapted a Bach fugue for "Blue Rondo ala Turk," Procol Harum lifted another for "A Whiter Shade of Pale," Wendy Carlos launched the synthesizer with "Switched-On Bach" and the entire classical rock movement was built on the Bach's back. Now pianist Ira Stein is taking a swing at the baroque master. Best known for his New Age hit, "The Underground" in the duo of Ira Stein & Russell Walder, he now has a new album called "Bach Improvisations," setting Bach chorales for his chamber trio of cello and saxophone. And like Bach, Stein also plays in a church. We go to church to talk with Ira Stein about improvising on Bach. Wednesday August 18, 1999 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH MICHAEL BROOK & DJIVAN GASPARYAN Late last year, guitarist Michael Brook collaborated with Armenian doudouk master Djivan Gasparyan on the album Black Rock where Brook wed Gasparyan's mournful melodies to ambient atmospheres and swampy grooves. They played in public for the first time this past summer at the WOMAD festival in Seattle. We caught them in the more intimate space of the Echoes living room, for a live performance. Thursday August 19, 1999 TEN ARTISTS FOR TEN YEARS OF ECHOES--R. CARLOS NAKAI One of the first living room concerts we recorded was in R. Carlos Nakai's home in Tucson. He's played live on the show three times since then and been featured four times. R. Carlos Nakai single-handedly launched the Native American Music scene with just a simple cedar flute. He's expanded his traditions to embrace pianist Peter Kater, guitarist William Eaton and the Japanese Wind Travelin' Band. We talk with R. Carlos and many of his collaborators to reveal Native music with universal resonance. ***************************************************************** *denotes compilation ID# 99-J07-00162 Monday, August 16, 1999 (Echoes Program 24B) ARTIST SELECTION RECORDING First Half Hour Medwyn Goodall Jungle Heart Medicine Woman II Alex Cline Rose Window Sparks Fly Upward David Arkenstone Reflections on the Sun Dance: Summer Pond Solstice III* Dean DeBenedicts Just Outside of Soundscape Gallery 3* Black Rock City Second Half Hour Paul Winter The Minstrel's Celtic Solstice Adieu Gregorio Allegri Et Secondum Sacred Treasures II* Michael Brook Worries Affliction James Wilkinson Taumutu Because of the Rain Hoppe, Tillman & The Waiting Afterglow Wheater Craig Markley Trip to Toboso The Lone Raven Third Half Hour Cornerstone Perfect Moment Out of the Blue Scott Huckabay Daydreams Alchemy Meg Bowles Night Sun Journey From the Dark Earth Sur Sudha Silu Festivals of Nepal Fourth Half Hour FEATURE: OTTMAR LIEBERT: IT'S NOUVEAU AGAIN Conrad Praetzel Ropes and Ladders Receive Kila Jasmine Tog E Go Bog E Deborah Martin Crossing Plateau Deep Roots, Hidden Water ****************************************** WANT TO ADD ANY OF THESE CDS TO YOUR COLLECTION?
