FEATURES FOR THE WEEK Monday August 9, 1999 STREET SONGS You can see them on the streets of Toronto and Manhattan, Paris and San Francisco. No, these aren't derelicts. They're street musicians, artists who have gone around conventional venues to present their music directly to unsuspecting listeners, selling their self-produced CDs while playing with a hat at their feet. We'll talk with artists who have found busking as the only avenue for their art, including Aryeh Frankfurter, David Michael & Randy Mead, Lisa Lynne and the patron saint of all modern street performers, Loreena McKennitt. Tuesday August 10, 1999 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH NANA SIMOPOULOS Nana Simopoulos is Greek descended, but she plays the Indian sitar. She's played with Don Cherry and Charlie Haden and released albums that show an increasingly subtle understanding of world fusion. Her latest is "After the Moon" (Pacific Time). We gather in Nana's Manhattan apartment where she sits on the floor and weaves melodies old and new for sitar, percussion and didgeridoo. Thursday August 12, 1999 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH HAPPY RHODES Singer-Songwriter Happy Rhodes is a cyber high priestess with a vocal range that encompasses masculine seductive lows and ecstatic, helium highs. Her songs are meditations on life, existence and computer games. Happy brings her group into the Echoes living room to play more intimate renditions of music from her latest album, "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight." It's a mesmerizing performance. Friday August 13, 1999 SHEILA CHANDRA: LOST & FOUND VOICES Throughout the 1990s, Sheila Chandra has charted a remarkable vocal trail, exploring cross-cultural references from India to Ireland. Her trilogy of albums, Weaving My Ancestors Voices, Zen Kiss and ABoneCroneDrone, are the "Well-Tuned Piano" of vocal drone music. But Sheila's voice hasn't been heard anew since 1995. A throat disorder nearly ended her career. But now, an operation later, Sheila Chandra sings anew. We look back on her career as she talks about the meaning of singing and the fear of re-defining yourself as an artist and a person. ***************************************************************** *denotes compilation ID# 99-J07-00157 Monday, August 9, 1999 (Echoes Program 23E) ARTIST SELECTION RECORDING First Half Hour Enya Ebudae Shepherd Moons Adrian Legg Shorelines Fingers & Thumbs Andy Pickford Raumfahre Maelstrom Afro Celt Sound Release Release System Second Half Hour FEATURE: STREET SONGS Levi Chen & The Wind, the Wolf, Celtic Zen Lisa Lynne & the Wild Loreena McKennitt Between the Shadows The Visit Angels of Venice Dragonfly Angels of Venice Steven Cragg Summerstream Discovery Third Half Hour Alex De Grassi Sweet Baby James Interpretations of James Taylor Maggie Sansone Farewell to Nigg A Traveler's Dream Clara Ponty Pierrot The Embrace Ron Boots Stranger Joie de Vivre Fourth Half Hour Alasdair Fraser & Men of Ulster Return to Kintail Tony McManus Ravi Mother Africa Journeys of the Sunwalker Scott Huckabay Daydreams Alchemy Brian Eno Under Cool World Hoppe, Tillman Shadows Fall Afterglow & Wheater Richard Burmer Apples on the Treasures of the Saints Windowsill ****************************************** WANT TO ADD ANY OF THESE CDS TO YOUR COLLECTION?
