ANDREAS VOLLENWEIDER: PAIRING OFF
On his latest album, COSMOPOLY (Sony Classical), Andreas
Vollenweider strips down to the basics, getting rid of elaborate
orchestrations and overdubs, and focusing in on interactions with
a cast of global musicians. He pairs off with Bobby McFerrin,
pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, singer Carly Simon and the Solis String
Quartet among others. Vollenweider talks about the Swiss
recording sessions that resulted in this album and about getting
down to basic musician relationships.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH IAN BODDY
British synthesist Ian Boddy plugs into Echoes for a live
electronic spacescape, sculpted in the Echoes living room. While
many musicians are unplugging, extolling the virtues of acoustic
instruments, natural sounds and rootsy playing, Ian Boddy is
resolutely wired. This legendary synthesist has been a major
influence on the British electronic music scene and his albums
span lush orchestral synthesis and classic space music ambiences.
His latest CD is CAGED (DiN).

AN ANCIENT ECHO FROM DAVID PRITCHARD
David Pritchard put out a great CD called AIR PATTERNS on which
he over-dubbed his own acoustic guitar up to five times, creating
a minimalist guitar orchestra. That album is out of print now,
but we've resurrected it in an Ancient Echo.

OMAR FARUK TEKBILEK'S TURKISH SOUND BATH
Omar Faruk Tekbilek is a joyful and serene musician. Born in
Turkey, but living in Rochester, New York, he plays just about
every Turkish instrument you can imagine, from the stringed
baglama to the ney flute, which he makes himself out of PVC
pipes. He's played these instruments on several acclaimed albums
including SULEYMAN THE MAGNIFICENT, FIREDANCE (Celestial
Harmonies) and his latest, ONE TRUTH (World Class). A collection
of his music, DANCE INTO ETERNITY (Celestial Harmonies), was just
released. We'll go back to a feature we did with Faruk and hear
him playing his exotic instruments.
