WENDY CARLOS-SONIC SEASONINGS RETURNS
In 1972, Wendy Carlos recorded Sonic Seasonings, a double LP of
ambient moods and environmental music years before that became
the norm. Sonic Seasonings (East Side Digital) has finally been
re-issued on CD. We took the opportunity to talk with Wendy
about her groundbreaking work and her latest album, Tales of
Heaven & Hell.

RHONDA LARSON'S FLUTE FUSION
Four years ago, Rhonda Larson released her solo debut, "Free as a
Bird." It didn't fly at the time but it's been given new wings
on a new label. Rhonda Larson stopped by Echoes back then to talk
about her shift from a classical flute to world fusion chamber
music on her CD, Free as a Bird. We'll revisit that feature on
Echoes.

IRA STEIN-BACH IMPROVISATIONS
Johann Sebastian Bach has always been a source of inspiration for
modern musicians. In the 60s, Dave Brubeck adapted a Bach fugue
for "Blue Rondo ala Turk," Procol Harum lifted another for "A
Whiter Shade of Pale," Wendy Carlos launched the synthesizer with
"Switched-On Bach" and the entire classical rock movement was
built on the Bach's back. Now pianist Ira Stein is taking a
swing at the baroque master. Best known for his New Age hit,
"The Underground" in the duo of Ira Stein & Russell Walder, he
now has a new album called "Bach Improvisations," setting Bach
chorales for his chamber trio of cello and saxophone. And like
Bach, Stein also plays in a church. We go to church to talk with
Ira Stein about improvising on Bach.
