FEATURES FOR THE WEEK Monday February 7, 2000 DAVID HELPLING'S LUMINOUS WORLD David Helpling plays guitar, but it usually doesn't sound like one. Instead, he sculpts the atmospheres and melodies that have marked his two solo albums, "Between Green and Blue" and "Sleeping on the Edge of the World" (Spotted Peccary). We talk to this self-taught composer about a music that charts the shades in between. Wednesday, February 9, 2000 THE STRANGE WORLD OF RYUICHI SAKAMOTO Ryuichi Sakamoto is a musical enigma. He came to renown in the 1970s as part of the synthesizer band, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and released a series of acclaimed solo albums in the 1980s. His movie scores include"The Last Emperor" and "High Heels." In the 1990s, he's collaborated with Iggy Pop, Laurie Anderson and David Byrne, scored dissonant electro-acoustic symphonies and totally kitschy pop. Now, Sakamoto has two new discs. One is orchestral renderings of his film scores. The other is BTTB, or Back to the Basics. It's a solo piano album, that includes a song that started out as a commercial jingle and wound up number one in Japan. Ryuichi Sakamoto talks about his strange world. Thursday February 10, 2000 AN ECHOES LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH THE R. CARLOS NAKAI QUARTET In a rare Echoes concert before an audience, we gathered the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet for extensions of Native American music. With Nakai on Native flutes, Will Clipman on drums and percussion, bassist/keyboardist Amochip Dabney and keyboardist/ singer Mary Redhouse, the quartet enthralled a packed house of listeners to Echoes affiliate station, WITF, in Harrisburg, PA. We'll bring you the highlights in this special Echoes Living Room Concert. Friday February 11, 2000 ADIEMUS' GLOBAL CHOIRS OF THE IMAGINATION Karl Jenkins has a perfect progressive music pedigree. A classically trained composer, he spent most of the 1970s as part of the brainiest of jazz fusion bands, the Soft Machine. After he left them, however, he disappeared from contemporary music until we noticed his name on the sleeve of "Songs of Sanctuary" by Adiemus. It turns out that Adiemus is Karl Jenkins. Along with singer Miriam Stockley, Jenkins' combination of world music vocal techniques, Enya-like choral arrangements and classical orchestrations has struck a chord around the world. They've now recorded three albums and Miriam Stockley has a solo CD. They've also just released a Best of collection (Omtown). We talked with Adiemus back at the beginning when their sound was still fresh. ***************************************************************** *denotes compilation ID#00-J07-000026 Monday, February 7, 2000 (Echoes Program 50C) ARTIST SELECTION RECORDING First Half Hour Phil Thornton Voice at the end Solstice of the Rainbow Kentucky Standard Rain on Danby Flats Kentucky Skies Band Ash Dargan Spirit Dreams Spirit Dreams Frank London Song of Praise Festival of Light 2* Second Half Hour Dean Evenson River of Dreams Healing Waters Spacecraft White Crane Echoes Living Room Concerts Vol. V* Mike Oldfield Enigmatism Guitars Mizuyo Komiya Tsugaru Overture Color Al DiMeola Midwinter Night Winter Nights Third Half Hour Liz Story 17 Seconds to 17 Seconds to Anywhere Anywhere Mark Hunton Living Between two Annapurna: Towering Sky Pat Thomi Lullaby for Ivy Fairy Tales Paddy Glackin & The Green Fields Celtic Christmas: Peace Micheal O'Domhnaill of Amerikay on Earth* David Parsons The Return Shaman Fourth Half Hour DAVID HELPLING FEATURE David Helpling Soul of a Child Sleeping on the Edge of the World Spool Tuesday Echoes Living Room Concerts Vol. V* Jim McGrath Eternal Twilight Passport ****************************************** WANT TO ADD ANY OF THESE CDS TO YOUR COLLECTION?
