FEATURES FOR THE WEEK
Monday 12/27/04
JAN GARBAREK: STILL DREAMING
Speaking from the famous Rainbow Studios in Oslo, where he cut
many of his most influential recordings, Jan Garbarek talks about
his latest album IN PRAISE OF DREAMS (ECM), a deep, smoldering
meditation that's part hymn, part lament, and part Parisian café.
Garbarek reflects on his poetic imagery, references to an earlier
style of jazz, and the art of dreaming.
Tuesday 12/28/04
JEFF GREINKE: ACOUSTIC AMBIENCES
Jeff Greinke has been a denizen of electronic ambient music since
the early 1980s when he released his first recording, CITIES IN
FOG, favoring slowed-down textures and elongated melodies. He
still leans towards that sound, but in recent years, since moving
to Tucson from Seattle, his music has been growing more acoustic
and overtly melodic. He's even cut two albums under the moniker
of Hana, with Sky Crys Mary singer Anisa Romero. Prior to a concert
in a church in Philadelphia, Greinke talks about his new directions
and recent albums, SOUNDTRACKS and WEATHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET
(FWD).
Wednesday 12/29/04
OTTMAR LIEBERT: A DAY IN THE WEEK
Ottmar Liebert made a career change a few years ago. After more
than a decade on major labels, the German-born, Sante Fe-based
musician struck out on his own, hoping to capitalize on the internet
download phenomenon. It hasn't quite worked out the way he anticipated,
but that hasn't stopped him from recording his finest CD in a
while, LA SEMANA (SSR). Ottmar strips down his sound to simple
percussion and guitar, but then creates amorphous, evocative edges
through electronic processing. Ottmar Liebert talks about his
new directions.
Thursday 12/30/04
JONATHAN ELIAS: AMERICA'S LOST SOUL
Jonathan Elias caused a buzz a few years ago with his global hymn
for peace, THE PRAYER CYCLE. While working on Prayer Cycle 2,
9-11 and its aftermath happened and Elias took a break to look
out across the American landscape instead of the global village.
The result is a haunting tone poem called AMERICAN RIVER. With
recitations from the late Johnny Cash, Emmy Lou Harris and Kris
Kristofferson along with performances from some of country &
western's best instrumentalists, he orchestrates a landscape that's
as much Cosmic as Country and Copland, searching for the lost
soul of America.
Friday 12/31/04
AN ECHOES TECHNO-TRIBAL NEW YEARS STOMP
Each New Year, ECHOES revs up the Beats-Per-Minute and kicks out
the jams for a New Year's Eve Techno-Tribal celebration. Drawing
from the same well-springs of the usual ECHOES soundscape, ECHOES
forms a seamless path into the new year, with music that dances
in your head. John Diliberto matches beats and mixes atmospheres,
riding the pulse of some of the newest ambient and techno-tribal
music, creating the ultimate New Years Eve chill-out room. If
your listeners are accustomed to ECHOES on Friday nights, this
will be a special treat for them as we depart the year 2004 and
welcome in 2005.
