LOREENA MCKENNITT-TRAGEDY AND REFLECTION
1998 was Loreena McKennitt's year. Her album, The Book of
Secrets (Warner Bros.) went into Billboard's Top 20 and the song,
"The Mummer's Dance" was a minor hit and a movie trailer
favorite. But tragedy struck Loreena earlier this year, when her
fiancee was lost in a boating accident. The results are a
benefit album for the Cook-Rees memorial Fund for Water Search
and Safety, Live in Paris & Toronto (Quinlan Road). It's also a
chance for McKennitt to reflect on her career and the impact of
her music.

CLARA PONTY'S EMBRACE
On her second CD, "The Embrace," (Philips) pianist Clara Ponty
brings in world music percussion and ambient atmospheres to
surround her serene, often romantic piano melodies. In her
Manhattan home, Clara talks about her new music and works out a
piece with percussionist Mino Cinelu.

DAVID HELPLING'S LUMINOUS WORLD
David Helpling plays guitar, but it usually doesn't sound like
one. Instead, he sculpts the atmospheres and melodies that have
marked his two solo albums, "Between Green and Blue" and
"Sleeping on the Edge of the World" (Spotted Peccary). We talk
to this self-taught composer about a music that charts the shades
in between.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH STEVE ROACH
Synthesist Steve Roach comes to the Echoes living room, creating
a half hour soundscape of immersive atmospheres synthesizers,
flutes, didgeridoo and rocks, Steve Roach creates a techno-tribal
landscape. Touching on themes from his albums On This Planet and
Light Fantastic, Roach calls up the spirits of a new world.
