MICHAEL HEDGES REMEMBERED
If you're an electric guitarist, you have to confront the legacy of Jimi Hendrix. Any trumpeter has to acknowledge Miles Davis and every saxophonist must bow to Charlie Parker. In that same way, every acoustic guitarist will have to confront the ground-breaking style of Michael Hedges. Since his debut album, BREAKFAST IN THE FIELDS (Windham Hill) 18 years ago, Hedges' has transformed the idea of acoustic guitar with a range of innovative techniques. But he's done more than that, wedding his skills to evocative, impressionistic melodies and live performances that were never short of exhilarating. Michael was killed in a car accident in 1997, but his legacy lives on in a new retrospective CD called BEYOND BOUNDARIES (Windham Hill). We'll hear Michael Hedges talk about a sound that still reverberates on Echoes.

Tuesday 12/11/01
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH LUMIN
In Oakland Hills in northern California, we enter the living room of Jeffrey Stott and get transported into another world where Bulgarian chants, middle eastern strings and global percussive grooves converge. Jeffrey's group is Lumin. Oud and yali-tambor player Jeffrey Stott, computer programmer Michael Emenau and singer Irina Mikhailova are joined by violin, doudouk and percussion players, who groove into the rhythms and ecstatic melodies of their new CD, HADRA (Lumin Music).

RASA KRISHNA TEMPLE
Thirty years ago, the Beatles George Harrison produced an album of Vedic chants and hymns called the Rada Krishna Temple which spawned the FM hit, "Govindam." That is the inspiration for the San Francisco duo Rasa, which adapts Indian hymns and devotional songs and turns them into global fusion trances. In their Marin County studio, Rasa's Kim Waters and Hans Christian talk about the sources of their new album, UNION (Hearts of Space) and answer the question, "Can white people chant?"

Friday 12/14/01
CLAUDE CHALHOUB'S LEBANESE LAMENTS
Claude Chalhoub is a Lebanese born classical violinist who grew up under bombs, gunfire, and religious strife until he went to the Royal College of Music in London. His self-titled solo debut (Teldec) is a haunting refrain merging Indian, Middle Eastern and classical motifs. Chalhoub's mournful melodies are lent a cloudy, ambient atmosphere by producer Michael Brook. Claude Chalhoub and Michael Brook talk about their cross-cultural collaboration.
