PRESTON REED: ACOUSTIC GUITAR MANIFESTO
Preston Reed wasn't trying to make a statement on his new album,
HANDWRITTEN NOTES (Outerbridge), but he did. Preston is an under-rated
marvel of the acoustic guitar. His name used to be mentioned in
the same breath as Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges and judging from
this tour de force solo album, it still should be. Reed uses many
of the same two-handed techniques employed by Hedges, tapping
his strings and banging on his instrument. He works a delirious
combination of deft polyrhythms and melodic counterpoint that
spins your head, yet, there's also a rustic folk edge to his playing
that keeps it earthy. Preston comes to Echoes to talk about his
twenty year career and continuing evolution.

AXIOM OF CHOICE: MIDDLE EASTERN MYSTICISM
Axiom of Choice is headed up by two Iranian musicians, singer
Mamek Khadem and guitarist Loga Ramin Torkian. On their second
album, NIYA YESH (Narada World) they orchestrate a sensual and
mystical sound that mixes Torkian's quarter-tone flamenco/Persian
guitar style with ambiences from India, percussion from the Middle
East and the darkly alluring voice of Khadem. Singing in Farsi
and with wordless vocals, her voice laces many of these songs
with a dark mystery. In their Los Angeles store, surrounded by
artifacts and antiques from the Middle East and Asia, they talk
about their music.

DECIPHERING A DIFFERENT PRELUDE
Artists have been reinventing classical music in cross-over formulas
for most of the second half of the 20th century, from the Swingle
Singers jazz take on Baroque counterpoint to Apollo 100's hit
adaptation of Bach in 1972. San Francisco Bay area producer Dawn
Atkinson has been adapting the classics to modern instrumentalists
for Windham Hill and Imaginary Road records for the last few years
with albums including THE IMPRESSIONISTS and A DIFFERENT MOZART.
Her latest foray is A DIFFERENT PRELUDE (DECCA), updates of classical
preludes from Bach to Gershwin. Dawn talks about classical cross-over
along with A DIFFERENT PRELUDE contributors Clara Ponty
and Patrick O'Hearn.

FORREST FANG: FRACTAL LANDSCAPES AND GLOBAL MUTATIONS
Forrest Fang is classically trained on violin, but his music has
always been a collage. His Richmond California home is stuffed
with odd instruments from around the world made of animal horns,
bones, skin, gourds, and metal. He works them into abstract designs
generated on computer and synthesizers. Lately he's been working
with odd American folk instruments, integrating them with computer-generated
fractal patterns. We visit Forrest Fang's sound museum and talk
about his recent album, GONGLAND (Projekt).
