MARK JENKINS: SYNTHESIZERS, SEQUENCERS AND THE CYCLES OF SOUND
Mark Jenkins has been on the English electronic music scene for years. He's been a music editor of some of England's biggest electronic music magazines, started his own label, and makes retro-space in his spare time. Mark Jenkins came by the Echoes studio, synthesizers and computers in hand, to talk about a music that started when he heard Tangerine Dream's PHAEDRA on the John Peel Show three decades ago.

ECHOES CD OF THE MONTH:
ULRICH SCHNAUSS: FAR AWAY TRAINS PASSING BY
Ulrich Schnauss is a German electronic artist who is influenced by forebears like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, but doesn't sound like he just emerged from their dusty studios after a 30 year hermitage. Instead, his electronica bristles with contemporary electro rhythms, a bit of New Wave romanticism, and melodies you want to last forever. Schnauss has perfected a balance between quiet yearning and joyful heroism in his music, like standing at the edge of the world. FAR AWAY TRAINS PASSING BY (Domino Records) is actually his first album, released in Europe in 2001, but it's been out of print and is being issued in the United States for the first time. It's lost nothing in the intervening years.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH TRISTEZA
OUR 400TH LIVING ROOM CONCERT
We didn't realize we were making our 400th Living Room Concert when we recorded the San Diego-based chamber rock group Tristeza on October 18th. Tristeza was a perfect Living Room Concert experience. Five musicians in their late 20's gathered in a living room in Old San Diego, with a panoramic view of a red-hued California sunset over the Pacific. Leaning over twin guitars, drums, bass and keyboards, the band assayed new music from their album A COLORES (Better Looking Records) and revved up a few old tunes marked by their intricate, interlocked guitar lines and insistent rhythms.

AL PETTEWAY & AMY WHITE: NEW APPALACHIA
Al Petteway is a gifted finger-style guitarist. His wife, Amy White, is a triple-threat on piano, mandolin and guitar. Together they've been exploring a new Appalachian music mixing original compositions with traditional songs and seasoned with occasional musical journeys to the Celtic Isles. Their latest CD, LAND OF THE SKY(Maggies Music) is an homage to the landscape right outside their North Carolina windows. Al Petteway and Amy White talk about that old country home and the new music it inspires.
