GARETH JONES-CLASSICAL GAS ENTRANCED Gareth Jones is a classically trained guitarist and former
dancer. The Louisville, Kentucky based musician released an album
called CLASSICAL TRANCE that merges his acoustic guitar classical
techniques with minimalist structures and hypnotic grooves. We
talk with Gareth about his early career as a ballet dancer, his
chrysalis state as a rocker and his rebirth as an ambient classical
guitarist.

HENRY WOLFF-TIBETAN BELLS In 1972, a mysterious album came out on Island Records with
no tunes or melodies, just a shimmering Aurora Borealis of sound,
diaphanous and reverberant, like windows opening up into an altered
state of consciousness. The album was TIBETAN BELLS and the musicians
were Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings playing ancient Tibetan ceremonial
instruments. They made several more recordings and now, that first
album has come out on CD for the first time. In New York, where
they now live, we take a journey with Henry Wolff into a world
of vibration.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH FREE SYSTEM PROJEKT Free System Projekt is a Dutch synthesizer trio following
the circuitry laid down by Tangerine Dream in the 1970s. On albums
like POINTLESS REMINDER (Quantum) they use modern synthesizers
modeled on old-style analog instruments like the Moog synthesizer,
improvising spacescapes around throbbing rhythms, ethereal Mellotron
atmospheres and modal melodies. Sitting on the Echoes Living Room
floor, surrounded by wires, computers and keyboards, Free System
Projekt lifts us into the stratosphere in this live performance.

TOM HEASLEY: AMBIENT TUBA "Ambient" is an adjective we toss around a lot on
Echoes, but we've never applied it to the tuba until Tom Heasley's
album, WHERE THE EARTH MEETS THE SKY (Hypnos). Heasley, who lives
in Palo Alto, Ca, uses extensive electronic processing to turn
his tuba into a pod of whales and a galactic transport ship in
slow motion, languid soundscapes. It often sounds electronic,
but every sound begins on the tuba. Heasley puffs up and blows
when he demonstrates his techniques on Echoes.
