FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 10/21/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH DAVID ARKENSTONE
David and Diane Arkenstone invite Echoes into their living room north of Los Angeles where they create their music of fantasy live. David Arkenstone is a multi-instrumentalist best known for his elaborate, cinematic keyboard orchestrations including several Grammy nominated albums. David and Diane got an ensemble together for a rare live performance of their music in the most intimate setting possible, their own home. They play music from across David's career, including his latest album, MUSIC INSPIRED BY MIDDLE EARTH (Neo-Pacifica).

Tuesday 10/22/02
JEFF GREINKE SLOWS THE WORLD DOWN
Take the pace of everyday life and slow it down to the Imperceptible movements of the planet. Take the sounds of a factory and spread them in a slow motion design. That's the concept of Jeff Greinke, a musician who has taken Brian Eno's ambient music concepts to extremes. He takes conventional instruments and slows them down, runs them backwards, sends them through extensive processing that changes their sound beyond recognition and places them in soundscapes like barges moving slowly through a fog. He's just released his most melodic album to date, WIDE VIEW (Hypnos). We go back to a 1992 profile of a musician who hears the world in slow motion.

Wednesday 10/23/02
BANCO DE GAIA-GLOBAL GROOVES
In his home in the west of England, we visit Toby Marks, better known by his recording persona, Banco de Gaia. Toby Marks has always eschewed the term "ethno-techno", a genre that he helped spawn despite his ambivalence. Banco de Gaia launched a fusion of global music elements welded to kinetic rhythms and electro-sync grooves that even eight years later, holds up to extended listening. His 1995 album, LAST TRAIN TO LHASA (Six Degrees) is a signpost of ambient and techno music. A collection of his music BANCO DE GAIA: 10 YEARS (Six Degrees) was recently issued. Toby Marks takes us back to the birth of Banco de Gaia in Birmingham's Mega Dog and Whirly-gig raves up to the present.

Friday 10/25/02
DARVISH'S WORLD FUSION DERVISH
The sound of world fusion comes to Echoes with Darvish, an inventive Bay Area trio with pianist Victor Spiegel, cellist Moses Sedler and percussionist Peter Maund. Together these musicians weave an improvised global landscape fraught with Indian modalities and Middle Eastern rhythms. We gather the three members of Darvish together to tell their tale.
