OCTOBER CD OF THE MONTH
JAPANCAKES: GIVING MACHINES
The story behind a band called Japancakes is that they started as a band who would play a single melody for 45 minutes. They've come up with quite a few more melodies since that initial concept and you can hear them on their engaging new CD, Giving Machines. Think the Penguin Café Orchestra meets Explosions in the Sky. It's a precision cut album of atmospheric guitar, classical structures and intricate arrangements that range from quaint to country. Japancakes' Giving Machines is our CD of the Month for October.

DEVA PREMAL AND MITEN IN A LIVING ROOM CONCERT
Deva Premal is one of the original modern chant Divas. She intones Hindu chants in her silken, air brushed voice over the trans-Indian arrangements of her longtime partner, Miten. These German musicians come into the Echoes Living Room with Nepalese bansuri flute player Manose to transfigure the air with chants that sound more like songs than rituals.
