JOHN MCLAUGHLIN-SHAKTI'S DEJA VU
Shakti was an all acoustic Indian fusion group put together by
John McLaughlin in the 1970s. Much loved and highly influential,
McLaughlin has reformed the band after 25 years and recorded a
double live CD, "Remember Shakti" (Verve). We talk with
McLaughlin and tabla player Zakir Hussain about Indian
improvisations and universal music.

TEN ARTISTS FOR TEN YEARS OF ECHOES
STEVE ROACH - SONIC ARCHAEOLOGY
Steve Roach wrote the first and only Echoes theme song. We
abandoned that many years ago, but we haven't abandoned Steve
Roach who has had an album in Echoes rotation without break since
the beginning of the show. Steve has traveled from an acolyte of
German space music to virtually creating the techno-tribal genre.
His music defies tradition, working on a level of pure sound,
using synthesizers along with the most primitive instruments,
including stones and didgeridoos to create his soundscapes. We
go inside the Timeroom, Roach's studio to discover the artifacts
and relics of a sonic archeology.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH SHEILA CHANDRA
Sheila Chandra is a remarkable Indian singer who came to renown
in 1982 with the group, Monsoon. Throughout the 80s and into the
90s she carved an individualistic path, focusing on the voice as
an instrument. Her trilogy of albums, "Weaving My Ancestors
Voices," "The Zen Kiss" and "AboneCroneDrone" (RealWorld) are
monuments to her heavenly sound and a music drawn from drones.
Sheila hasn't sung publicly for 5 years, but we caught her just
as she was returning to public singing in this rare performance.
We hear Sheila singing new music and songs form her anthology,
"Moonsung" (RealWorld).
