HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK
ECHOES OF ABBESS HILDEGARD VON BINGEN
A WEEK LONG CELEBRATION IN THE YEAR OF HER 900TH BIRTHDAY
Abbess Hildegard von Bingen was a 12th century Benedictine nun whose
influence has lasted well beyond her time. She wrote over 75 hymns, chants
and sequences that are not only still being performed today, but which are
being transformed, updated and made part of contemporary musical and
spiritual vocabulary.
During the week of September 21, Echoes will present "Echoes of Abbess
Hildegard von Bingen." We will celebrate The Abbess through words and
music, exploring her life and times and illuminating her effect on
contemporary music and consciousness.
Monday 9/21/98 (Program V-39)
SEQUENTIA-CANTICLES OF ECSTACY
Sequentia is German based medieval ensemble who have recorded all the works
of Abbess Hildegard von Bingen. Sequentia founders Barbara Thornton and
Benjamin Bagby talk about the pure source of Hildegard's music and their
modern interpretations.
Tuesday 9/22/98 (Program W-39)
VOX: GREGORIAN SPACE CHOIRS
Vladimir Ivanoff is the producer of Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares, but he
was also the first to update the music of Abbess Hildegard von Bingen with
his group, Vox. Ivanoff, a musicologist, talks about his unusual approach
to ancient music.
Wednesday 9/23/98 (Program X-39)
THE BREATH OF GOD
On "The Breath of God," several singers talk about the impact of Hildegard
on their music including Sheila Chandra, Barbara Thornton (Sequentia) and
Sister Germaine Fritz. This show will also include an hour long
exploration of Abbess Hildegard von Bingen's music that includes Gothic
Voices, whose "Feather on the Breath of God" re-ignited interest in the
Abbess's music, Richard Souther, Pilgrimage's "Nine Songs of Ecstacy, The
Anonymous Four, Vox, and David Lynch & Jocelyn Montgomery.
Thursday 9/24/98 (Program Y-39)
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH JOCELYN MONTGOMERY & DAVID LYNCH
Singing the Music of Abbess Hildegard von Bingen, Film Director David Lynch
(Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Wild At Heart) and singer Jocelyn Montgomery took
a different look at Hildegard's music on their album Lux Vivens. We'll hear
a living room concert with Jocelyn singing to Lynch's swirling landscape of
drones and environmental sounds.
Friday 9/25/98 (Program Z-39)
RICHARD SOUTHER'S VISIONS OF HILDEGARD
We travel back to the 12th century music of Abbess Hildegard von Bingen,
transformed by Richard Souther. Sister Germaine Fritz and synthesist
Richard Souther talk about their trans-millennial collaboration called
"Vision," an album that topped the classical charts in 1997 with it's
evocative interpretations of Abbess Hildegard's music. He followed it up
with "Illumination."
