ECHOES AT THE MOVIES Echoes opens up the virtual multiplex to sample soundtracks
from the latest batch of films, not all of them Hollywood blockbusters.
We'll be hearing soundtracks by Chinese composer Tan Dun for
Jet Li's Hero and Gustavo Santaolalla's score to the Che Guevara
biopic, The Motorcycle Diaries. We'll also go off the Hollywood
red carpet and hear music for the animated film Illuminated Manuscripts.
It's all on the widescreen of Echoes.

CARL WEINGARTEN: DOBRO DREAMS Carl Weingarten is a veteran musician on the Alternative scene.
He started out in St. Louis doing one man shows of electric guitar
and effects ala Robert Fripp of King Crimson while also exploring
electric fusion. But when he moved to San Francisco more than
a decade ago, he began incorporating world music elements into
his sound and moving from electric guitar to acoustic dobro.
He's just released a compilation of his work from the last 14
years called Hand in the Sand (Multiphase). Carl Weingarten has
been featured on Echoes many times. We go back to a 1995 in the
period of transition for his music.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH THE CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO Imagine three virtuoso guitarists playing as if they were
one musician, but with 18 strings. That's the California Guitar
Trio, three musicians who studied with King Crimson guitarist
Robert Fripp and played in his League of Crafty Guitarists, a
20 piece guitar orchestra, before embarking on their own path
13 years ago. Earlier this year, CGT played an Echoes Living
Room concert and debuted several new pieces. Those tunes now
appear on their latest album, WHITEWATER (Inside Out Records).
In this reprise broadcast, the trio comes into the Echoes Living
Room to play a pair of new songs, an old Echoes favorite and a
startling rendition of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."
Friday 09/24/04
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH LORI CARSON Even though she's worked with avant-rock group the Golden
Palominos and Bill Laswell, Lori Carson was best known as a singer-songwriter.
But that's not the sound of her new CD, THE FINEST THING (Meta
Records). Instead, she's concocted a shadowy ambient dreamscape
full of breathy vocals, sometimes singing lyrics, more often not,
surrounded by a chamber group of echoes and memories. Lori Carson
comes into the Echoes living room to open an ambient scrapbook
of musings and murmurings.
