FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

SOLAS: CELTIC CROSSROADS
Solas talks about Celtic music at a crossroad. Solas is the Celtic music ensemble headed up by multi-instrumentalist Seamus Egan. Best known for writing the music for Sarah McLachlan's hit, "I Will Remember You," Egan's Solas has been pushing the boundaries of Celtic music from the inside out. Their latest CD, THE EDGE OF SILENCE (Shanachie) is produced by Neil Dorfsman, best known for his work with Dire Straits, Sting and Paul McCartney. He brings a more electronica sound to Solas as they play original instrumentals and covers of tunes by Jesse Colin Young, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan. Solas talks about tweaking their Celtic heritage.

Wednesday 09/18/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH DARVISH
The sound of world fusion comes to the Echoes Living Room with Darvish. We travel to Oakland where this inventive Bay Area trio weaves an improvised global landscape fraught with Indian modalities and Middle Eastern rhythms. Pianist Victor Spiegel, cellist Moses Sedler and percussionist Peter Maund lay down their infectious melodies and grooves, playing music from their self-titled debut album on Mangoid Records.

Thursday 09/19/02
PHIL THORNTON'S BUDDHA-TO-EGYPT EXPERIENCE
Veteran British guitarist and keyboard player Phil Thornton has been exploring a world of musical exotica and mysticism since the early 1980s. After stints with The Bay City Rollers and Sinead O'Connor, he's created a trans-global sound of didgeridoos, spiraling e-bow guitar lines and lyrical Renaissance recorders. In recent years he's been exploring rhythms and melodies of the Middle East with Egyptian percussion wizard Hossam Ramzy, who has played with Jimmy Page & Robert Plant and Peter Gabriel. In his southern England home, Thornton unfolds the tapestry of his latest album, DREAMSCAPES (New World Records) and his Buddha Experience collections.

Friday 09/20/02
TONY MCMANUS: SCOTTISH MOORS & CEOL MORE
Tony McManus is a virtuoso finger style guitarist from Scotland who has three CDs, including his latest, CEOL MORE (Compass). A self-taught musician, McManus didn't look to Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method. Instead, he taught himself Scottish bagpipe tunes and transposed them to his six string. Tony McManus talks about his guitar journey.
