INTERVIEWS AND CONCERTS FOR THE WEEK
Monday 09/04
ABSOLUTE AMBIENT: SAME COUNTRY, DIFFERENT ZONES
Strangers in Life, Fellow Travelers in Ambience
Matt Coldrick and Matt Hillier had never met when they started making music together over the internet. The results were the CD Elemental Journeys, one of the best and most spacious electronica albums from 2005, and well it should be. Hillier usually records as Ishq, a master of chilled ambience and Coldrick has a charming CD called Music for a Busy Head. In the Brighton countryside of England, we actually got them together in the same room to talk about ambient music and soundtracks for Hip Hop Princes.

ECHOES SEPTEMBER CD OF THE MONTH
TOMMY EMMANUEL: THE MYSTERY
Echoes welcomes in the autumn with an all acoustic, solo guitar album from Tommy Emmanuel. Among fingerstyle guitarists, Tommy Emmanuel is an icon, but listeners of poignant melody and intricate musical constructs are equally drawn to his music. The Mystery continues his trend on recent albums of lovely finger-style airs with few stompers tossed into show why he scares so many guitarists with his technique.

MICHAEL BROOK: INFINITE VARIATIONS
Michael Brook came to renown working with Brian Eno and released his influential ambient guitar album, Hybrid in 1982. Since then he's gone on to play with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Djivan Gasparyan, and has scored and worked on films like Affliction and Black Hawk Down. He brings all those influences into his CD, RockPaperScissors. We hear an interview with Michael Brook and his band, including Lisa Germano and Richard Evans.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH AJANTAMUSIC
Former New Wavers from Ultravox and Magazine get ambient live on Echoes
Ultravox, Magazine and Cowboys International were bands from the New Wave that had a then very young guitarist named Robin Simon and his brother Paul as members. Robin meted out slash & burn guitar and Paul pounded the drums. That was 25 years ago. Now Robin and Paul Simon work as AjantaMusic, playing a melodic brand of instrumental ethno-ambient music. In a charming Victorian rowhouse in London, Robin and Simon plug in and play live.
