AZAM ALI-SACRED AND SERENE Azam Ali has spent the summer touring with Grateful Dead drummer
Mickey Hart's group Bembe Orisha and is usually heard with her
Los Angeles world fusion group, Vas. Born in Iran and raised in
India, Ali usually sings in a supra-lingua of Farsi, Hindi and
sounds of the imagination, but on a new CD called PORTALS OF GRACE
(Narada Records), she adapts medieval chants and hymns from across
Europe and the Middle East. Ali and her partner, percussionist
Greg Ellis create a hybrid Middle Eastern sound with with ouds,
hammered dulcimers, dumbeks and chimes decorating the hymns. Azam
Ali and Greg Ellis talk about their immersion in an ancient world
of song.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH LISA LYNNE We've had Celtic harpist Lisa Lynne perform many times on
Echoes before, but never quite like this. In her San Fernando
Valley living room, she gathers members of the Lian Ensemble,
a group of Iranian exile musicians who add their exotic colors
to Lisa's Celtic and Elizabethan tinged themes. Lisa plays music
from her newest album, MAIDEN'S PRAYER (New Earth).
Wednesday 09/04/02
STEVE TIBBETTS- Meditative Mayhem Guitar iconoclast Steve Tibbetts reveals his manic meditations
on Echoes. Hailing from Minnesota, Tibbetts has been charting
a course through a hallucinogenic world fusion for a quarter century,
most of it recorded by the German ECM label. A legend in indie-progressive
music circles, Tibbetts garnered additional renown a few years
ago when he adapted the chants of Tibetan nun Choying Drolma to
his ambient landscapes. On his latest album, A MAN ABOUT A HORSE
(ECM Records), Tibbetts debunks the serene concepts of meditative
music and creates an electro-acoustic guitar excursion of throbbing
rhythms and pyro-technic leads.
Friday 09/06/02
JOHN WILLIAMS: AFRICAN GUITAR John Williams talks about African designs on classical strings.
Best known as an English classical guitarist, less known as founder
of the British fusion group Sky, John Williams' new CD, THE MAGIC
BOX takes him to Africa, at least virtually. THE MAGIC BOX puts
a classical spin on melodies derived from Africa. With his classical
guitar in hand, Williams explains his African sojourn.
