FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 08/25/03
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH NIGEL SHAW
Join us in the 800 year old farmhouse of Nigel Shaw and his wife, Carolyn Hillyer when they take us back in time to the ancient music of the Northernlands. Shaw's latest album is Ancestors (Seventh Wave) on which he adapts recordings of northern native tribes like the Sami and builds his own compositions around them. Accompanied by these old, and often long dead voices singing ancient songs, Nigel and Carolyn play live with Nigel on Native flute and Carolyn singing and playing percussion.

AUGUST CD CLUB SELECTION
Tim Story & Hans-Joachim Roedelius/Lunz
Lunz is a lake in Austria, but it might as well be a lake of the imagination as Tim Story and Hans-Joachim Roedelius create a haunting soundscape of refined elegance and introspective moods that take a subtle shift to the left of reality. Tim Story needs no introduction for Echoes listeners. We coined the term "ambient chamber music" to describe his sensual liquid sound that merges classical influences along with electronic ambiences and a gift for melody that would leave Erik Satie crying. Hans-Joachim Roedelius is one of Tim's mentors. A founding member of the German electronic duo Cluster (then called Kluster) in 1970, he's gone on to release dozens of recordings ranging from pure ambient to classical works. Roedelius and Story have been working together for a few years, and finally they've released an album together called Lunz. Its melodies linger like the aftermath of a dream, both familiar and strange, painted in water-color textures that make each melody shimmer like quicksilver.

Wednesday 08/27/03
BOB HOLROYD'S GLOBAL PLUNDER
Bob Holroyd has the world at his fingertips, or at least on sample discs he uses to create his ethno-techno sound designs. He had a dance club hit a couple of years ago with his percussion driven "African Drug", but his latest CD, Without Within (Six Degrees) takes a more introspective approach to global fusion. In his English studio, Holroyd talks about making library music and adapting the sound of the world form musicians he's never met.

Friday 08/29/03
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH SAVAE
Join us in the living room of SAVAE [SAH-vay] the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble when they intone the hymns and songs of their new CD, ANCIENT ECHOES. SAVAE has created an international following for music that unearths ancient Judeo-Christian hymns from around the world, sometimes played with medieval instruments, oather times using Aztec drums and Meso-American wind instruments. But always centered on their seven voice harmonies. We travel to the living room in San Antonio where SAVAE create their music to hear them perform live.
