FEATURES FOR THE WEEK
THE BEST OF THE ECHOES LIVING ROOM CONCERTS
Monday August 28, 2000
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH ROB EBERHARD YOUNG
Back in 1997, Rob Eberhard Young put out the album "Sticks &
Stones," that had a few heads spinning with his virtuoso
two-handed guitar techniques and electronic processing. Back in
the fall of 1998, we recorded Rob in a weekend of Living Room
Concerts at WVXU in Cincinnati. All of those concerts have been
broadcast but we were holding Rob Eberhard Young's performance to
coincide with the release of his already overdue CD, "Speak." In
the interim, his record label got stomped in a corporate merger,
and Rob was sent into limbo, as was his performance. But it was
too good not to air, and good music is never too late. We'll
revisit this lost performance by Rob Eberhard Young, including a
surprise duet with guitarist Steve Erquiaga.
AND
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH WILLIAM WATSON
William Watson is a pianist who grew up in Mississippi, steeped
in gospel music as well as the classics. William lives in San
Francisco now and he's turned those roots into his own music on a
pair of CDs, FIELDS and BURNHAM WOODS (Burnham Woods Records).
In San Francisco, William sits down at the piano and plays some
new songs and old favorites in a live performance. A selection
from this performance will appear on THE ECHOES LIVING ROOM
CONCERTS Vol. 6 CD.
Tuesday August 29, 2000
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH
DAVID DARLING AND KETIL BJORNSTAD
David Darling is the renowned cellist who played with the Paul
Winter Consort for years before striking out on his own with
several recordings on the ECM label. Ketil Bjornstad is a
Norwegian pianist with dozens of recordings. These musicians get
together in the Echoes Living Room to explore slow motion largos
and dusky improvisations, drawing from their latest album of
duets, EPIGRAPHS (ECM).
AND
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH MICHAEL MANDRELL
Michael Mandrell is a journeyman musician. He played with the
world fusion group, TAOS, and released a solo CD called THE GREAT
SPIRAL DANCE (Ageless Music). Michael fuses gentle guitar
picking with world music touches and evocative compositions on
his debut. This past spring, Michael sat down in the Echoes
living room for a solo performance. A selection from this
performance will appear on THE ECHOES LIVING ROOM CONCERTS Vol. 6
CD.
Wednesday August 30, 2000
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH LAGQ
Early this summer, LAGQ returned to the Echoes Living Room for
more new music for four guitars. The quartet picks their way
through music off their latest CD, AIR & GROUND (Sony Classical),
including the title piece, and The Penguin Caf Orchestras'
"Music for A Found Harmonium."
AND
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH IAN BODDY
On a hot, sultry summer day, British synthesist Ian Boddy plugged
in for a live electronic spacescape, sculpted in the Echoes
living room. While many musicians are unplugging, extolling the
virtues of acoustic instruments, natural sounds and rootsy
playing, Ian Boddy is resolutely wired. This legendary synthesist
has been a major influence on the British electronic music scene
and his albums span lush orchestral synthesis and classic space
music ambiences. His latest CD is CAGED (DiN). A selection from
this performance will appear on THE ECHOES LIVING ROOM CONCERTS
Vol. 6 CD.
Thursday August 31, 2000
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH RYUICHI SAKAMOTO
In the late spring, Japanese composer and keyboardist Ryuichi
Sakamoto sat in The Echoes Living Room for an unusually intimate
performance on solo piano. Sakamoto came to renown in the 1970s
as part of the synthesizer band, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and
released a series of acclaimed solo albums in the 1980s. His
movie scores include "The Last Emperor" and "High Heels." The
enigmatic composer has two recent discs. One is CINEMAGE,
orchestral renderings of his film scores; the other is BTTB (Sony
Classical), or BACK TO THE BASICS. Ryuichi performs music from
thiese and other recordings, in a delicate and personal
performance.
AND
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH ALAN STIVELL
This summer, Celtic legend Alan Stivell came to the Echoes Living
Room. The Breton harpist influenced an entire generation and
single-handedly launched the Celtic harp revival with his early
1970's album, RENAISSANCE OF THE CELTIC HARP. We hear Alan
giving a rare performance on a classical concert harp, playing
traditional music and original compositions that come from his
CELTIC SYMPHONY album and his latest CD, BACK TO BREIZH
(Dreyfuss).
Friday September 1, 2000
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH
EDGAR MEYER & JOSHUA BELL
w/Sam Bush and Mike Marshall
We originally ran this as part of our Living Room Concerts for
Thanksgiving show in 1999. Edgar Meyer is a classically trained
and bluegrass bent bass player. Joshua Bell is a classical violin
virtuoso. They're joined by bluegrass mandolinist SAM BUSH and
guitarist/mandolinist MIKE MARSHALL for a set of original chamber
folk songs drawn from their recent Sony Classical album, SHORT
TRIP HOME.
AND
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH RASA
In their storefront home in Marin County, Rasa takes us into the
ecstatic world of vedic hymns. Mixing cello, sarangi, and
nykelharpe, with global percussion, Hans Christian creates a
landscape for the serene voice of Kim Waters to intone chants
from their debut album DEVOTION (Hearts of Space). A selection
from this performance will appear on THE ECHOES LIVING ROOM
CONCERTS Vol. 6 CD.
