DAVID BORDEN: THE MOOG OF MOTHER MALLARD'S PORTABLE MASTERPIECE
COMPANY In the early 1960s, no one was touring and playing Moog synthesizers
live. But David Borden put together a synthesizer trio to perform
his intricate, minimalist inspired contrapuntal designs. They
were called Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company and
they were swapping patchcords and turning knobs a couple of years
before Tangerine Dream or Kraftwerk got their first synthesizers.
David Borden is still composing, recording and performing live.
We talk to him about the early days of Moog performance and his
latest directions.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH YO-YO MA Acclaimed classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma comes to Echoes with
an all-star cast of Brazilian musicians to play music from his
new CD, Obrigado Brazil (Sony Classical). Joined by guitarists
Sergio & Odair Assad, pianist Kathryn Stott, wind player Paquito
D'Rivera, singer Rosa Passos and percussionist Cyro Baptista,
Yo-Yo Ma winds his way through themes by Brazilian composers,
including Jobim and Villa-Lobos. It's a lively performance full
of both joy and that haunting Brazilian-Portugese melancholy known
as "saudade."

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH RANDY ARMSTRONG Randy Armstrong is a gifted acoustic guitarist who has been
on the World fusion scene since the mid 1970s when he was a member
of the world fusion chamber group, Doah. Since that band broke
up, this New Hampshire-based artist has played more world fusion
with Uno Mundo and his own trio. He recently composed the score
to the PBS series, Dinner on the Diner (Ellipsis Arts) and now
has a new solo CD, No Regrets (Domo). Randy not only brought
his acoustic guitar, but kalimbas, gongs, Native flutes and synthesizers
creating a one-man soundscape in realtime. Randy Armstrong plays
live, on Echoes.
