INTERVIEWS AND CONCERTS FOR THE WEEK

Monday 08/07
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH LEO ABRAHAMS
An electric guitar wizard conjures up layers of sound in a live solo performance
Leo Abrahams' "Honey Trap" was one of the most engaging albums of the last year with its delicate atmospheres and a sense of whimsy and eclecticism that recalled The Penguin Café Orchestra. In a basement studio in London, Leo plugs in his electric guitar and with a rack of effects and loops, creates intimate versions of songs from Honeytrap and his ambient opus, Scene Memory.

AUGUST CD OF THE MONTH
MICHAEL BROOK: ROCKPAPERSCISSORS
An avatar of Ambient guitar returns with first solo CD in 14 years

Michael Brook defined a style of ambient guitar marked by echoing delays and reverb and long, calligraphic melodies on albums like Hybrid and Cobalt Blue. That last one came out in 1992 and on rockpaperscissors, Brook crams in the intervening 14 years of film work, cross-cultural collaborations and more in an album of cinematic expanses and personal reflections. Rockpaperscissors is our August CD of the Month.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH MICHAEL MANRING
A bass guitar mutant morphs deep DNA in a live performance

Saying Michael Manring plays the electric bass guitar just doesn't quite do it. He plucks his custom Zon bass guitar in a ballet of flying limbs and impossible pirouettes. Manring has appeared on just about every Windham Hill album that has an electric bass, has several albums of his own ranging from shredding metal to delicate chamber works, and recently put out a purely solo electric bass guitar CD, Soliloquy. Michael Manring comes into the Echoes Living Room to play live.
