PETER ROSS: SHAKUHACHI WINDS
The shakuhachi flute was born in the meditations of Japanese Zen
Buddhism, but Seattle based musician Peter Ross has adapted the
instrument to a more contemporary sound on albums like PRIMITIVE
HEART. He adds in Indian percussion and covers compositions by
John Coltrane. In his Seattle home, Peter Ross talks about his
Shakuhachi winds.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH NAOYUKI ONDA & JIA PENG FANG
A meeting of east, west and east again when Japanese pianist
Naoyuki Onda performs with Chinese erhu player Jia Peng Fang.
The erhu is a two-stringed instrument played with a bow, but
unlike the violin, erhu players move between the notes in
haunting, voice like bends. In this rare performance from Tokyo,
they play music from Onda's album, DREAM and Fang's two CDs,
RIVER and RAINBOW (Pacific Moon).

VAS: HARVESTING THE SOUL
Vas is Iranian born and Indian raised singer Azam Ali and LA
global percussionist Greg Ellis. For the last three years they've
been creating an exotic fusion of Azam's hybrid vocalese and
Greg's elaborate percussion orchestrations. They continue their
seductive sound on their latest CD, IN THE GARDEN OF SOULS
(Narada World). In their Hollywood Hills home, Vas reveals the
seeds of their their melodically rich and rhythmically sensuous
music.

DECIPHERING A DIFFERENT PRELUDE
Artists have been reinventing classical music in cross-over
formulas for most of the second half of the 20th century, from
the Swingle Singers jazz take on Baroque counterpoint to Apollo
100's hit adaptation of Bach in 1972. San Francisco Bay area
producer Dawn Atkinson has been adapting the classics to modern
instrumentalists for Windham Hill and Imaginary Road records for
the last few years with albums including THE IMPRESSIONISTS and A
DIFFERENT MOZART. Her latest foray is A DIFFERENT PRELUDE
(DECCA), updates of classical preludes from Bach to Gershwin.
Dawn talks about classical cross-over along with A DIFFERENT
PRELUDE contributors Clara Ponty and Patrick O'Hearn.
