INTERVIEWS AND CONCERTS FOR THE WEEK
Monday 07/16
AN INTERVIEW WITH ULRICH SCHNAUSS: A STRANGELY INFLUENTIAL MUSICIAN
Ulrich Schnauss is a German electronic artist who is influenced by forebears like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, but unlike so many retro-space artists, he doesn't sound like he just emerged from their dusty studios after a thirty year hermitage. Instead, Schnauss is keyed into contemporary electro rhythms, a bit of new wave shoegazer romanticism, and melodies that have the infinite, never-ending sound of a Pachelbel Canon. He's just released his third album, Goodbye, but it's really hello to an even more psychedelic sound. Ulrich Schnauss talks about his music on Echoes.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH GENERAL FUZZ
An electronic composer reverse engineers his music to play live
General Fuzz is the recording persona of James Kirsch. He studied classical music before being introduced to electronics and music computers, but now he creates an ambient electro-lounge music under the guise of General Fuzz. On his new CD, Cool Aberrations, he started out playing with live musicians, but then processed it all in a computer. For this concert in his San Francisco home, he brings those musicians back in to play live for real.

AN INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTOPHER O’RILEY: PIANOS OF GRACE
Classical pianist taps into the spirit of the late Nick Drake
Christopher O'Riley has made a second career interpreting the music of some of rock's more idiosyncratic figures. After albums featuring music from Radiohead and Elliott Smith, O'Riley has created a hymn to the late Nick Drake, the little known, but very influential English singer-songwriter who took his own life after releasing three albums in the early 1970s. It's called Second Grace. Christopher O'Riley talks about his passion for Drake's music and lyrics and the task of transforming them into solo piano performances.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH DAVID FULTON & GILES REAVES
Electronic interpolations played live
Most electronic music these days consists of one musician staring into a laptop computer and occasionally holding down a few keys on a synthesizer. David Fulton and Giles Reaves, however, are performing electronic musicians who augment their laptops with multiple keyboards and a drummer to realize the sonic textures of their debut album, The Range. They plug into the Echoes living room to play live.
