JULY CD OF THE MONTH.
BANCO DE GAIA: FAREWELL FERENGISTAN
It's an Ethno-Ambient excursion from Banco de Gaia, the now legendary recording persona of England's Toby Marks. Farewell Ferengistan has all of Banco's earmarks: Middle eastern grooves, chants, Qawaali drums all mixed in a searing electronic landscape. Ferengistan may be an ancient name Arabs had for the west, as Marks claims, or it could be a nod to Star Trek-Next Generation and the venal Ferengi race. But it's a musical journey no matter how you take it.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH AJANTA MUSIC
Former New Wavers from Ultravox and Magazine get ambient live on Echoes
Ultravox, Magazine and Cowboys International were bands from the New Wave that had a then very young guitarist named Robin Simon and his brother Paul as members. Robin meted out slash & burn guitar and Paul pounded the drums. That was 25 years ago. Now Robin and Paul Simon work as Ajanta Music, playing a melodic brand of instrumental ethno-ambient music. In a charming Victorian rowhouse in London, Robin and Simon plug in and play live.

CHRISTOPHER O'RILEY: A PIANO IN OBLIVION
Classical pianist probes the depths of Elliott Smith
Classical pianist Christopher O'Riley has found a second career, interpreting the music of edgy rock artists. He's already released two CDs of piano renditions of Radiohead. Now he takes on Elliott Smith, the tragedy-bound singer who took his own life a few years ago. Christopher O'Riley thinks he's the greatest American songwriter since Cole Porter and he's recorded an entire CD of Smith's work called HOME TO OBLIVION. O'Riley presents his case for Elliott Smith on Echoes.
