FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

JOHN WILLIAMS: AFRICAN GUITAR
John Williams talks about African designs on classical strings. Best known as an English classical guitarist, less known as founder of the British fusion group Sky, John Williams' new CD, THE MAGIC BOX takes him to Africa, at least virtually. THE MAGIC BOX puts a classical spin on melodies derived from Africa. With his classical guitar in hand, Williams explains his African sojourn.

Wednesday 07/03/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH TINA MALIA
Singer-songwriter Tina Malia performs live on Echoes from her Marin County home. A child of the sixties even though she's only 24, Tina Malia is a gifted guitarist and pianist, who draws her inspiration from a pastoral vision of the world, with influences ranging from Joni Mitchell and Loreena McKennitt. In her Marin County home, Malia gathers some of the musicians who crash in her apartment to perform the delicate melodies and lithe harmonies of her music, heard on her debut CD, SHORES OF AVALON (Omtown).

Thursday 07/04/02
AMERICAN LANDSCAPES
Echoes celebrates the Fourth of July with a sound portrait of the country from the Maine coastline to Alaska's Aurora Borealis, the Great Smokey Mountains to the Grand Canyon. Put down the beer and hotdogs and listen to the sunset over the desert southwest and hear the echoes of Canyons from Arizona to Manhattan. With landscape evocations by Ottmar Liebert, R. Carlos Nakai, Joanne Shenandoah, George Winston, Keola Beamer, Nicholas Gunn and Philip Aaberg, travel through American landscapes on Echoes.

Friday 07/05/02
BOBBY MCFERRIN: OTHER VOICES
Bobby McFerrin is a chameleon vocalist. His career began by imitating acoustic instruments, but over the years he's evolved a sound more like a global language, an esperanto of the soul. He's played with artists like Chick Corea and Yo-Yo Ma and conducts classical orchestras around the world. On his latest album, Beyond Words, McFerrin creates a series of vocal vignettes, over-dubbing his voice, playing synthesizer and featuring guest appearances by Corea, Gil Goldstein and Richard Bona. Now living in Philadelphia, Bobby McFerrin speaks in words about his latest album, BEYOND WORDS (Blue Note).
