His evocative, atmospheric and sometimes stormy compositions evoke his longtime home in Fairbanks, Alaska. We talk with the noted composer about his life and his permanent ambient installation, The Place Where You Go To Listen, where music is triggered by seismic, magnetic and cosmological events.

He plays an instrument that looks like an electric stick, but it sounds like a string orchestra when he layers it in real time performance. Schoening talks about his journey from lapsed cellist to sound technician and back into the new world of music making.
