INTERVIEWS AND CONCERTS FOR THE WEEK

Monday 06/11
AN INTERVIEW WITH TOM ROTHROCK: POP PRODUCTIONS AND DOBROS OF DOOM
The producer of Beck and James Blunt goes ambient Americana

Remember that slide guitar on Beck's hit, "Loser?" That was producer Tom Rothrock who is also responsible for records by James Blunt and Elliott Smith. On his CD, Resonator, Rothrock picks up a dobro resonator guitar and unfurls a dark country blues in ambient hues. In his Los Angeles home, Rothrock tells his resonator tales and dusts off his dobro.

AN INTERVIEW WITH STEVE ROACH: SECRET SOURCES
A synthesizer icon plucks his sources out of the air

In our latest Secret Sources, synthesist Steve Roach puts on the headphones while we plug in an iPod to play him music that might have been part of his musical journey. From minimalists to space music, pop singers to didgeridoos, Roach identifies and talks about the music of his life and some of the people he's influenced.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH MICHAEL HALAAS AND JOAN JEANRENAUD
A stormy duet for piano and cello
Michael Halaas is a journeyman pianist with several CDs of solo piano. But this isn't your average meditative, new age keyboard–he's been called a cross between Metallica and Pink Floyd. In a San Rafael living room, Halaas is joined by cellist Joan Jeanrenaud, a name familiar to fans of the Kronos Quartet. Together they create the dramatic structures from their CD, The Lucidity Project, live.

Friday 06/15
AN INTERVIEW WITH RASA: SAFFRON BLUE
Sanskrit chants re-imagined in global tapestries

For all of the new millennium, Rasa has been exploring the sound of Indian Bhajans or prayers, creating new melodies for Kim Waters' luminous voice and setting them in a global landscape of percussion and Hans Christians' multiple strings, including the cello, sarangi, and Indian violin, and nyckleharpe a Swedish keyed fiddle. Formerly based in San Francisco and now living in northern Wisconsin, they talk about bhajan fusion seven years on.
