BELA FLECK & EDGAR MEYER: CLASSICAL AMERICANA Bela Fleck is the virtuoso banjo picker who cut his fingers
on bluegrass, but who now bends his strings to sounds from across
music genres. For several years he's worked with bassist and composer
Edgar Meyer, a classical musician with a country bent. They recently
got together on the live CD, Music for Two (Sony Classical), a
rollicking set of classical vignettes and their own originals
that range from expansive impressionistic works like "Palmyra"
to finger-flying workouts like "Bug Tussle." The two
musicians talk about their unique take on a classical americana.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH DONNA DELORY In her Los Angeles living room, Donna DeLory sits cross-legged
in front of her harmonium and unfolds the Mantric chants of her
latest CD, THE LOVER AND THE BELOVED (Ajna Music). Although she
has several solo albums out, DeLory is best known as a back-up
singer for Madonna on every Madonna tour and most albums since
the mid 1980s. On her own, DeLory strikes a more meditative pose.
Joined by an ensemble of tabla, guitar and cellist Cameron Stone
from Vas, DeLory loses herself in the ecstatic meditations of
her delirious mantric arrangements. We join her live, on Echoes.
Wednesday 06/16/04
TREY ANASTASIO: A PHISH IN CLASSICAL WATERS Phish is the highly regarded and willfully eclectic jam band
from Vermont that has taken on Grateful Dead-like allegiance from
their fans. A band that is usually plugged in and often improvising,
Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio shows another side to their sound
with his solo album, Seis de Mayo (Elektra). Anastasio creates
a suite of works scored for chamber orchestra, string quartet,
brass band and occasionally, some acoustic guitar. Many of these
tunes have been played by Phish, but Anastasio says their roots
are in his pre-Phish classical studies. Trey Anastasio talks about
swimming in classical waters on Echoes.
Thursday 06/17/04
GLEN TARACHOW: TICK, TOCK, DRIP Glen Tarachow is a New York City based composer who spends
most of his time writing commercial jingles and soundtracks. But
on his own, he creates an ambient soundworld called "Waterclocks"
(Burning Water Rebellion Records). It's a mesmerizing work of
interlaced melodic cycles picked with time-stepping delicacy.
Unlike most cyclical pieces, Tarachow recorded his guitar and
keyboard piece line by line, playing all the parts straight through.
In his Astoria studio, Glen Tarachow takes us inside the synchronous
timepiece of WATERCLOCKS.
Friday 06/18/04
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH VINCE REDHOUSE Vince Redhouse is an Arizona based musician and is one of
six music siblings in the Redhouse clan that includes singer/bassist
Mary Redhouse. A one-time evangelical preacher, Vince Redhouse
brings Native themes to Christian spirituals, turning them through
his Native flute in sensitive ensemble settings. Vince Redhouse
talks about his personal approach to the Native American flute
and a Native vision of spirituality.
