FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 05/27/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH THE MEDIAEVAL BAEBES
England's Mediaeval Baebes come into the Echoes Living Room to sing their madrigals and plainsong live. The Mediaeval Baebes are a vocal choir from England who have taken Mediaeval poetry and songs and cast them across 8 beautiful voices. Neither an updating nor a faithful recreation, the Baebes compose most of their own melodies, but in an ancient style, using poetry from and writings in Latin and Early English. Their latest CD, The Rose (Nettwerk America) is their most gorgeous yet. John Diliberto sits in the middle of the Mediaeval Baebes as they evoke the ages.

Tuesday 05/28/02
PATRICK BALL'S CELTIC JOURNEY
Long before the Celtic Craze hit America, harpist Patrick Ball was spreading the Irish gospel, playing the songs of legendary bard Turlough O'Carolan and other Celtic tunes. Born in America and living in Northern California, he's recorded nine albums in the last 20 years, each one full of the lilting melodies and haunting atmospheres of the Celtic Isles. His latest is FAIR PLAY (Celestial Harmonies). Ball is one of the few masters of the wire strung harp, which was played in the 17th and 18thcentury, unlike the conventional gut and nylon stringed harps of today. Patrick Ball weaves the tale of his Celtic journey.

PHILIP AABERG'S MONTANA MEMORIES
Philip Aaberg has lived in San Francisco for the better part of three decades, but he was born and raised in Montana and that's the landscape that shapes his music. A pianist who elicits accolades from George Winston, Will Ackerman and Samite, Aaberg came to renown in the mid-1980s at the height of Windham Hill Records and made several albums for the label, including his critically acclaimed debut, HIGH PLAINS. Philip Aaberg looks back on a career that includes hit records with Elvin Bishop ("Fooled Around and Fell in Love") and Henry Gross ("Shannon")and his own music, in which he evokes the endless horizons and small pleasures of the plains states with his melodically arresting solo piano compositions. His 2001 album, LIVE FROM MONTANA (Sweetgrass Music) was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Friday 05/31/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT OF SLACK KEY GUITAR WITH KEOLA BEAMER, GEORGE KAHUMOKU JR, OZZIE KOTANI
Hawaiian Slack Key is a special style of guitar playing with the strings slightly looser than normal. It was born in Hawaii and in the last decade has experienced a rebirth through George Winston's Dancing Cat Records. In the heart of winter, three virtuosos bring some Hawaiian sunshine into the Echoes living room. Keola Beamer is the reigning king of Hawaiian Slack key and has a new album called SOLILOQUY (Dancing Cat). George Kahumoku, Jr. is one of the few slack key players who use a twelve string guitar. His latest is SWEET & SASSY (Keila Farm Records). Ozzie Kotani is from the younger slacker generation and his new album is TO HONOR A QUEEN (Dancing Cat) on which he plays the music of Hawaii's last Queen, Lili'uokalani. We'll hear these low key masters in solos, duos and a rare trio performance.
