FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 05/13/02
LISA LYNNE HARPING FOR HEARTS
Celtic harpist Lisa Lynne has released several albums, including CDs on the Windham Hill label and her latest, MAIDEN'S PRAYER (New Earth). In her southern California home, Lisa tells the story behind her new album, which fuses her Celtic themes with a Persian group, The Lian Ensemble. She also talks about Harps for Hearts, where she performs at children's hospitals, women's shelters and recovery centers, often leaving behind a gift of a small Celtic harp.

Tuesday 05/14/02
JANE SIBERRY-DOWNSIZING LIFE
Jane Siberry rarely takes the conventional approach. An influential cult figure in the 1980s, she left her major label to form her own Sheeba records. Siberry has always been the Tom Robbins of singer/songwriters, spinning out lyrics that make the mundane profound. She has consistently defied conventional song- structure, turning her uncanny voice around stream-of- consciousness digressions and side-long glances and unique arrangements. Her latest album is a collection of collaborations called CITY (Sheeba Records) that includes her work with Hector Zazou and Barney, the purple dinosaur. Jane sits down to talk about her music and downsized life.

DANNY HEINES: TUVAN TONES & TWO-HANDED TUNES
Danny Heines is a guitar wizard who uses the two-handed tapping techniques pioneered by Stanley Jordan and the late Michael Hedges. On his new CD, WHAT WORLDS THEY BRING (Vadadisc), Heines adapts Eastern European folk songs to his own atmospheric designs. A student of Tuvan throat singing, Heines merges sounds from Tuva to Kazakhstan with his own guitar techniques. He's joined on the album by Kazak singer Irina Mikhailova, vocalist Tina Malia and bassist Michael Manring. In his San Francisco home, Danny Heines talks about music between tones and between worlds.

Friday 05/17/02
SHAMAN'S DREAM-CALLING THE SPIRITS
Shaman's Dream reveals the incantations of their meditative music on Echoes. Shaman's Dream is percussionist Craig Kohland and sitar/guitarist Chuck Jonkey. Jonkey is a global traveler who brings back sound recordings and instruments from around the world. With Craig Kohland they merge these into global soundscapes that take a meditative hue until you listen deeper to the environmental designs, global percussion and the sitar/guitar of Chuck Jonkey. Custom designed, it looks like a guitar but plays like a sitar. Their latest album is PRANA (Shaman's Dream Music). Shaman's Dream talks about their musical mysticism.
