FEATURES FOR THE WEEK
On ECHOES Monday 05/01/06

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH ANDREAS VOLLENWEIDER
Legendary Swiss artist improvises live.
Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider is certainly an icon of modern music. He
has a recently released CD called VOX (Kinkou) on which he sings English lyrics
for the first time. But when he comes into the Echoes living room, he leaves
the songs outside and instead improvises on Celtic harp and Japanese koto.
Performing live with percussionist Andi Pupato, Vollenweider spins out three
enchanting songs that reveal his mastery of melody and just about anything with
strings.

CHRISTOPHER O'RILEY: A PIANO IN OBLIVION
Classical pianist probes the depths of Elliott Smith.
Pianist Christopher O'Riley has found a second career, interpreting the music
of edgy rock artists. He's already released two CDs of piano renditions of
Radiohead. Now he takes on Elliott Smith, the tragedy-bound singer who took
his own life a few years ago. Christopher O'Riley thinks he's the greatest
American songwriter since Cole Porter and he's recorded an entire CD of Smith's
work called HOME TO OBLIVION. O'Riley presents his case for Elliott Smith on
Echoes.

SLOW SIX: ELECTRIC STRINGS & AMBIENT ZING
Electric ambient chamber music for the 21st Century
The lessons of the 60s avant-garde and 70s minimalism converge in this New York
City band that is creating an electric ambient chamber music. The debut album
by Slow Six, PRIVATE TIMES IN PUBLIC PLACES was called the Classical CD of the
Year by Time Out Magazine. Only this classical group plays electric guitars,
electric keyboards and electric strings. They create a slow dreamy sound that
harkens to a melodic brand of ethereal minimalism, but with an edge of the 60s
avant-garde. In a chilly Brooklyn loft, Slow Six talks about a chilled
classical sound.
