AN ECHOES SOUNDSCAPE & REFLECTION ON EARTH DAY 2002 On this Earth Day 2002, Echoes presents musicians speaking
about music drawn from nature. From the wind whistling across
a reed or a musician beating drums to the rising sun, nature has
always been integral to music. We celebrate that relationship
on this Earth Day 2002. We'll hear from artists like Paul Winter,
Samite of Uganda, the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart, The Soundings
of the Planet Ensemble, Bernie Krause and Robert Rich with contemplations
on the land from which their music springs. Their thoughts will
be wrapped in music from the Grooved Whales of Lisa Walker to
the canyon calls of Paul Winter and many more. The sound of the
planet lives on in an Echoes Soundscape & Reflection on Earth
Day 2002.
Tuesday 04/23/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH PATRICK BALL Celtic harp wizard Patrick Ball plays live in the Echoes Living
Room. Long before Riverdance, Patrick Ball was ringing his wire
strung Celtic harp strings, revitalizing the music of Celtic bards
like Turlough O'Carolan. Born in America and living in Northern
California, he's recorded 9 albums in the last 20 years, full
of the lilting melodies and haunting atmospheres of the Celtic
Isles. His latest is FAIR PLAY (Celestial Harmonies.)
Patrick is one of the few masters of the wire strung harp, as
opposed to the conventional gut and nylon stringed harps of today.
The wire strung harp was played in the 17th and 18th century by
Irish harpers. Patrick Ball makes it sing in this live performance
on Echoes.
Thursday 04/25/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH ROBERT RICH Robert Rich plugs into the Echoes Living Room and performs
live. The San Francisco Bay area synthesist is one of the leading
exponents of techno- tribal music, mixing throbbing percussive
rhythms with swirling textures and melodies that may undulate
on bamboo flutes, lap steel guitar or synthesizer. In the Echoes
Living Room, he conjures up the darkly shifting textures of his
latest CD, BESTIARY (Release) as well as his more organic, techno-tribal
works like PROPAGATION (Hearts of Space).
Friday 04/26/02
DAVID ARKENSTONE: A TRIP TO MIDDLE EARTH Multi-instrumentalist David Arkenstone talks about his journey
to Middle Earth. In a sense, you could say that David Arkenstone
was born in Middle Earth. In the early 1970s, he took the name
Arkenstone from Tolkien's book, "The Hobbit" and named
one of his sons after a place in "The Silmarillion."
Arkenstone has always infused his music with fantasy imagery,
and now, after two decades of recording, he's created the soundtrack
to a book that influenced his life at an opportune time. It's
called MUSIC INSPIRED BY MIDDLE EARTH (Neo Pacifica). In his Southern
California home, David and Diane Arkenstone talk about their trip
to Middle Earth and their many recording personas including Ah-Nee-Mah
and Earthtrybe.
